Cooking with no propane

Post by hopefulfilled on Sat 28 Feb 2009, 7:36 pm

We have been brainstorming as a family in preparation for the coming hyperinflation/economic collapse. One of the things we have been thinking that we will need is a way to cook in the summer. I have happened upon a great idea, and this could be used even for those of you in the city. We have a wood cookstove we use in the winter for cooking all winter long, along with heating our house, but it gets so hot here in the summer, it would be awful to use in the house in the summer. I came upon this website and we are building one of these: http://www.homegrownevolution.com/2007/11/our-rocket-stove.html We will build ours of rocks, as it will fit in with our earth oven which we use for baking bread. Here is a picture of our earth oven: http://illiweb.com/fa/pbucket.gif
This stove will use very little twigs/cardboard/whatever will burn and heat very fast. We are looking also at another rocketstove book by Ianto Evans and Leslie Jackson, titled "Rocket Mass Heaters superefficient woodstoves you can build and snuggle up to. These use way less wood than regular woodstoves.
When we finish with the rocket stove which we will put in a shady area near our home, I will post a picture, and tell you all how it works (or doesn't). Today, we have been working on our gutters, for our rain water collection system. Still trying to figure out a way to bypass a generator for our deep well. We may try to dig a spring where I have dowsed and looks like there may be water there.

We've had success with solar ovens. A couple of boxes and a roll of aluminum foil (and a piece of glass) will make a respectable solar oven big enough for a casserole dish. Your earth oven looks impressive--I saved the links as favorites. These may be our next homeschool project! I look forward to hearing more about how these work!

Very good hopefilled. I know people make rocket stoves out of tin cans and stuff too.

Here is a link on solar ovens. I have been wanting to make one too but have not got around to it.

Also hawkiye posted a link here on gasifier stoves, they burn twigs and stuff too.
